CPI Leader Annie Raja Visits Durg, Slams BJP Government Over Nuns’ Arrest:
In Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, controversy has erupted following the arrest of two nuns on charges related to alleged human trafficking and religious conversion. While a delegation of Congress MPs from Kerala visited the female prison and questioned the basis of the action, leaders from the Communist Party of India (CPI) also reached Durg to show solidarity and raise concerns over the incident.
CPI National Executive Member Annie Raja, along with Politburo Member Vrinda Karat and two other CPI MPs, arrived in Durg on Tuesday in response to the arrest of two nuns currently lodged in the central jail. The leaders attempted to meet the arrested nuns, but were reportedly denied entry by prison authorities, who cited jail manual regulations.
The jail officials informed the CPI delegation that visitation hours had ended at 2 PM and assured them that a meeting would be arranged the following morning. However, Annie Raja and Brinda Karat strongly objected to the denial, stating that they had submitted a formal written request via email well in advance, and accused the prison administration of deliberately blocking the meeting.
Annie Raja sharply criticized the BJP government, alleging mistreatment of the nuns and targeting by right-wing groups. She said,
“What is happening under BJP rule is nothing short of harassment. The nuns are victims, not criminals. We stand with them and will fight against this injustice.”
Brinda Karat echoed her sentiments, stating,
“This is a clear violation of rights. The jail authorities are not above the law. Denying a meeting even after a formal request is unacceptable.”
Both leaders demanded transparency in the investigation and accountability from the administration, warning against communal narratives being used to target minorities and social workers.
